Chapter Thirteen

SEVEN OF SWORDS

An unwise attempt to take what is not one’s own

I already knew something about Jeremy. After all, he’d been a training client of mine for about four months. Being a personal trainer is kind of like being a bartender in many ways. You spend about an hour each session with a person, one on one, taking them through the rigors of a workout, sometimes several times a week. There is a level of trust involved. They are paying you money to help them lose weight, or build muscle, or reshape their body, or just get into better shape and improve their health. In order to give them the best possible workout, you have to find out all kinds of interesting things, like what they do for a living, how much stress is involved in their lives, how and when and what they like to eat. Do they have any bad habits? Do they smoke cigarettes? Have they ever had heart trouble? Is there a family history of high blood pressure, on and on and on, ad nauseum. That first session is so deadly dull and boring, and then there’s always the chance their goals physically are completely ridiculous and unattainable. I had one client who wanted to lose forty pounds for a wedding she was going to in three months. Those people you have to really be gentle with, and explain how unhealthy and unrealistic that goal can be. Once you’ve discussed all these things and you’ve trained them a couple of times, the client-trainer completely professional business relationship, in many ways, changes and becomes more of a friend-helping-a-friend thing. It is important for your clients to like and trust you, so you have to be open and honest with them. You ask them about themselves, and frequently, like a bartender or a hairdresser, after a certain period of time you wind up finding out all kinds of information about them that their spouses, partners, and best friends don’t even know. It is amazing what people will tell you while they are sweating. And just when you think you’ve heard almost everything, there’s always someone who will surprise you. I’m always afraid I might get called to testify in a divorce suit or something. I mean, I try to maintain strict client confidentiality, but it’s not like I’m a lawyer or a doctor or something.

Go figure human nature.

Jeremy had been with me for a little under four months, and I had liked him. He was a cute boy with a very sweet and trusting disposition. He made me laugh. The challenge of training him was putting size on him. He didn’t think he could get bigger, but wanted to try. He was a small guy and only weighed about 130 when we met, and it was all in his butt and legs. He didn’t have much body fat, maybe a little bit you could pinch around his middle. His butt and legs were strong, big, and muscular from years of playing tennis.
